The brief

Colorescience is a brand known for cutting-edge sun protection and clinical-grade skincare. Rather than starting from scratch, when Colorescience approached Roswell NYC to boost their retention marketing efforts, they already had a robust set of flows in Klaviyo and Attentive, including flows that supported the loyalty program and post-purchase product education. Colorescience’s team asked Roswell to refine what was currently in place, relying on our marketing gurus to bring next-level strategy while creating intensive personalization.

The approach

Optimizations Right Out of the Gate

Roswell started with a thorough audit of all automations, a few quick fixes, and a game plan for further improvement. Simultaneously, we rebuilt the Colorescience email template to include many options for dynamic formatting and live text while maintaining a cohesive look across providers. This new template provided flexibility and visual continuity across new flows and one-off campaigns.

Pre-Purchase Experience

Roswell branched Checkout, Cart, and Browse abandonment flows based on whether someone has or has not purchased in the past, delivering the most relevant messaging, offers, and personalization to each group.

Post-Purchase Experience

Roswell created a replenishment flow that delivers messaging and product recommendations based on which products were tied to the original purchase, prioritizing top-sellers. Additionally, we consolidated multiple post-purchase educational flows into two refined flows to better control the orchestration of what was sent and when.

The execution

Quiz Results Flow

For visitors who take Colorescience’s online quiz (powered by Gobot), Roswell created a Klaviyo flow that delivers personalized product recommendations based on results while also sending full welcome flow messaging to subscribers who had yet to receive it. This welcome content is similarly geared toward skin concerns specified during the quiz, helping guide and speed up purchase decisions.

Server Side Tracking

Upon Roswell's recommendation, Colorescience added Black Crow to their tech stack. With the new platform, we launched server side tracking capabilities to better identify users and onsite events, thereby increasing traffic through abandonment flows and the effectiveness of retargeting campaigns across Klaviyo, Attentive, Meta, and Google. Colorescience also launched Black Crow's pop-ups in Attentive, utilizing its AI-optimized timing functionality to increase subscriber sign-ups thereby boosting list growth.

The results

When Colorescience had an uptick in site traffic due to one of their best-selling products, Sunforgettable® Total Protection® Face Shield Flex, going viral on social media, they were in the best position possible to capitalize on the increased top-of-funnel subscriber acquisition because their retention marketing orchestrations were in top-notch shape. This led to a 42.9% surge in total revenue, including a 45.7% rise attributed to Klaviyo and a 32.2% boost from email campaigns. Revenue from email flows also experienced a significant 99.8% increase.
